CSN Bay Area’s Andrew Baggarly reports that the Baltimore Orioles have acquired catcher Johnny Monell from the Giants in exchange for cash.
The 27-year old was originally drafted by the Giants from Seminole Community College (FL.) in the 30th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. After several seasons of average minor-league production, Monell had a breakout year in 2013, hitting .275 with 20 home runs and 64 RBIs in 415 at-bats at AAA Fresno. Monell also made his major-league debut in September, and hit .125 in minimal action (eight at-bats across eight games).
Monell joins Matt Wieters, Steve Clevenger and Michael Ohlman as the four catchers on the Orioles’ 40-man roster. While he doesn’t figure to break camp with the major-league squad next Spring, Monell could in theory…
